Create Safe & Clean Learning Spaces with Cooperative Purchasing

Sanitation and cleanliness are key to ensuring the health and safety of your students during the school year. As you purchase for the upcoming year, consider all of the surfaces and areas that your district or campus’ facilities managers need to keep clean. Everything from the air students breathe in lecture halls to the floors your elementary students sit on during story time needs to be on your building maintenance teams radar.

Follow along as we dive into some of these cleaning procedures and solutions to help you keep your school or university in pristine condition.

Cleaning Solutions for Your Entire Learning Environment

The CDC recommends cleaning surfaces at least once a day to reduce the risk of germs spreading, which can be time consuming. From the classroom to the cafeteria to even the gym, Sanitaire offers cleaning products that can make your cleaning process quicker and more efficient.

Key Terms

Cleaning The removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning
does not kill germs, but by physically removing them, lowers their
numbers and reduces the risk of spreading infection.
Disinfecting Using chemicals or equipment to kill 99.999% of germs on surfaces.
Sanitizing Using chemicals or equipment to kill at least 99.9% of germs on
surfaces. Does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but
when used after cleaning, can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

Multi-Surface Cleaning

Let's take a look at the cleaning protocols your schools can adopt to restore confidence in the safety of your spaces.

Minimum Cleaning Protocol

Creating a healthy environment for your students can be achieved by increasing the frequency and thoroughness of your cleaning as much as possible. At minimum, there are 3 steps to take when completing your cleaning process:

  1. Clean all surfaces (carpet, soft surfaces such as linens and upholstery, hard surfaces, and address IAQ with air purifiers and ventilation)
  2. Sanitize or disinfect high-touch surfaces (tables, doorknobs and faucets) using an EPA-registered sanitizer or disinfectant
  3. Remove any disinfectant solution after the appropriate amount of time; always follow the label instructions

You may not have the time to sanitize every time you clean, so focus on high touch areas and complete a full sanitation at a later time. To reduce the time it takes you to work through your cleaning process, use equipment that provides optimized levels of cleaning and performance to maximize your productivity per hour.

Wet Cleaning

With the amount of traffic the floors in your schools get, it is important to keep them clean even though it is one of the most time-consuming areas to clean due to the mass volume of space. Germs sticking to shoes is one sure way to spread germs and infection. In order to save time and money, Sanitaire offers a two in one solution that vacuums and washes all at once so you can ditch the mops, sprays and buckets. Get more done in less time with the Sanitaire® HydroClean™. Compared to traditional hard floor cleaning methods, the Sanitaire® HydroClean™ eliminates steps to double your productivity.

Air Purification

Air purifiers can help reduce particulates and increase air flow, contributing to creating a cleaner environment for your staff and students. The CDC recommends using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters wherever possible, especially in clinics or nurses' offices. As you are evaluating solutions for your university or school’s indoor air quality (IAQ) with your facilities and janitorial managers, consider the following:

  • Clean air delivery rate (CADR)
    • Coverage area needed
  • Filter types
    • Pre-filter
      • Removes particulates
      • Captures larger airborne particles from the air
    • HEPA filter
      • Removes particulates
      • Captures 99.7% of the tiny particles we can't see
      • Captures pollen, dust, dander and other allergens
      • Decreases the triggers for allergies and asthma attacks
    • Carbon filter
      • Removes particulates
      • Captures and absorbs odors
  • Air changes per hour (ACH)
